Annually, the Mid Penn Motion AAU Club awards a $1,000 College Scholarship to a deserving MPM high school senior in recognition of their illustrious MPM basketball career, service to the community and demonstrated leadership abilities. The Mid Penn Motion Board of Directors is proud to announce that the 2015 MPM College Scholarship recipient is Kari Lankford.
Kari, a two-year starter for Coach John Studer’s MPM Elite National College Showcase Team, was a dominant force on a highly talented MPM team that played at the highest level of AAU basketball. As a standout combo-guard, Kari was considered the mid-state’s fiercest competitor. “Kari brought an intensity and confidence to the team that elevated everyone’s level of play against the country’s top Nike sponsored teams including the Philadelphia Belles, Fairfax Stars and Boo Williams Elite”, stated Coach Studer.
As a scholarship student-athlete this fall, Kari will take her mental and physical toughness, offensive arsenal and lock-down defense to Shepherd University in West Virginia. With a tremendous basketball IQ, highly coveted skill set and unsurpassed competitive spirit, Kari is expected to play a significant role as a college freshman for Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year, Jenna Eckelberry. “We are very excited to have a player like Kari join our program”, stated Coach Eckelberry. “Kari was my first recruit ever as a Head Coach. She is a very special player that can help us compete for championships. More importantly than anything that she will do on the court, we know that we are getting a great family girl that excels in the classroom as well”, added Coach Eckelberry.
Kari also had a stellar career at West York High School and graduated as the School’s all-time scoring leader with 1380 points. She was a 4 year Varsity starter and was voted a YAIAA All-Star each year, including First-Team honors as a junior and senior. Kari led her team to four consecutive YAIAA Division titles, a YAIAA County Championship and deep into the District and State playoffs each year of her illustrious career. Impressively, Kari was voted a District 3 AAA Tournament All-Star in both her sophomore and senior years. Indicative of her versatile athletic abilities, Kari was also selected as a YAIAA volleyball All-Star her senior year.
Kari exemplifies the high standards of the MPM student-athlete through her volunteer service and leadership positions within her high school and the York community. A Distinguished Honor Roll student for four years, Kari also was a volunteer assistant basketball coach at West York Middle School and a prominent volunteer leader for the the school’s summer league program. Kari is an active member in Cornerstone Bible Church’s youth group and an integral cast member in the community’s Easter Passion Play. Kari also was a commended employee and learned valuable life skills through her work commitment at Dairy Queen and as a life guard at York College. Kari epitomizes the MPM Elite player, a compassionate, dedicated and well-rounded student-athlete with an unrivaled competitive spirit to excel in all facets of life.
“It was such a pleasure to coach such an exceptional person, competitor and player as Kari and to get to know her tremendous family over the last 3 years”, said Coach Studer. “Kari’s entire family was incredibly supportive of our team. The relationships formed with her parents, David and Rebecca, and Kari’s wonderful grandparents, will always be some of the most rewarding aspects of coaching Kari”, reminisced Coach Studer.
Kari is the consummate teammate and relished her time with MPM. “Over the past two years, I have had the honor of playing for Mid Penn Motion under Coach John Studer. As a result of playing for MPM, my basketball skills and basketball knowledge have tremendously improved. I have also met not just amazing basketball players but extraordinary teammates that will be lifelong friends”, stated Kari. “I will be playing college basketball at Shepherd University thanks to the exposure I received from Mid Penn Motion and I am very excited to begin a new chapter of my life at Shepherd University”.
Congratulations, Kari! Mid Penn Motion is tremendously proud of you, your accomplishments and your impressive standards of excellence. You are an exceptional young lady with a very bright future. Best of luck at Shepherd University!!!
